I encourage women to read their notes and debrief with me after the birth. I firmly believe it is vital to be honest with a woman about your care, even if you make mistakes. Evaluating your care is a lot more difficult when you are a locum because you do not stay in one place for long. Obtaining feedback from colleagues is important in that situation.

I was involved in a written complaint for the first time ever in my midwifery career during my time as a locum. On the one hand, I am very proud that I have only received one written complaint after all these years. But on the other hand, I was upset that a woman was not satisfied with the care she received from me - the last thing I want to do is provide an inadequate service. Whilst the ensuing investigation cleared me of any blame, the incident brought home to me:
  • the importance of thorough documentation;
  • the importance of being really thorough as locum, because the risk of things falling down the cracks are greater than when you are a LMC because you do not have the knowledge of the woman or context in the same way as a LMC;
  • the importance of being cognizant of the local context of maternity services.
  • Reflecting on midwifery feedback from women

I have had very positive feedback from colleagues at Lumsden Maternity Unit.

Like to think I acknowledge, protect, nurture and respect' every woman in my care. I am not sure that a midwife's role is to nurture a woman- is that not the role of other women in the whanau and community?

2006

I encourage women to read their notes and debrief with me after the birth. I firmly believe it is vital to be honest with a woman about your care, even if you make mistakes. It’s also important to acknowledge this to students so they can learn/reflect with you-this makes a midwife a positive role model for students.

2004

I encourage women to read their notes and debrief with me after the birth. I firmly believe it is vital to be honest with a woman about your care, even if you make mistakes. I continue to participate in Review yearly although I have small numbers because I value the whole process and feel I am being a role model for students.
